Reasons For A Dog Or Puppy’s Itching Tendencies

There are many reasons why your dog may be scratching, here are some of the more common ones.

The first one is those irritating mites all pet lovers are aware of; the flea. You dog may have an infestation or have an allergy to flea bites. See if there are any fleas visible on your pets coat its an infestation.

After a good search you find no fleas in his coat, you should try flea control for approximately four weeks to see if it had been an allergy to a fleabite.

There are many skin complaints that make dogs itch. Bug bite, bacterial and fungus are the common ones. Tell tale signs are reddened skin which is moist and there could also be an unpleasant odor. Try a specialized shampoo first to see if the symptoms are alleviated.

Another possible cause is Mange. If your dog loses fur when he scratches this is more than likely the cause.

If you think that your pet is suffering from mange, they need examining by a vet and scrapings taken from his skin. Laboratory testing will show if the mite is present and medication for your pet will be prescribed.

When you have dismissed all these possibilities it’s time to look a little closer to home. Your dog may have a common allergy to plants, pollen, dust or even certain types of food.

Is there a certain time of year that your dog scratches more? If this is in the spring and summer is may well be a grass or pollen allergy.

It can take a long time to pin down the cause of your pets itching, but is well worth it as you will have a healthy and much happier dog who is free of that irritating itch.
