Dogs have become the staple in American culture as another puzzle piece to completing the American Dream. They have been portrayed as the comical oaf, brave hero and lovable companion in the media. The love of these pets has been around for centuries, and their popularity only seems to grow. They have more than proven themselves as useful and necessary parts of society. Is it time to jump on the dog loving bandwagon? Besides, what’s a white picket fence if you don’t have a dog behind it?
Since the early civilizations have been used as a friend and an important tool. They allowed early migrations to succeed and early human groups to survive. They have been glorified on Roman and Greek art. It seems strange that ancient civilizations would give the direct descendants of wolves the time of day.
Their roles from the ancient era have gone through history and have found their place in modern society. In the past, migrating groups would keep them around for early detections of predators. Due to their great sense of smell, vision and hearing, they were able to detect threats before it became too late. Today this is represented by the guardian of the house, the guard dog. It becomes easy to get rest at night knowing a dog is there to protect you from intruders.
In the past, when blankets and warm clothing were hard to come by, dogs offered their warmth to comfort the humans. Today the same idea exists, as the dog and human live in a symbiotic relationship, snuggling in bed on cold nights to transfer warmth and comfort.
Hunting has been a staple for human survival since the stick was first fashioned into a spear. Man’s best friend has been at the humans side since then to assists in the hunt, using natural instincts to track and recover the animals. Today the sport of hunting would not be successful without the dog. They are used the same way as centuries ago, able to bring back a kill quickly, cleanly and intact.
It is easy to see why dogs have transcended through history to become the most loved pet in the world today. They have assisted the human civilization develop more than they get credit for, and they don’t ask for anything more than a tummy rub.
