Is Your Dog Food Approved?

Are you aware there’s a body that tests and certifies the nutritive value of dog food? Although there are critics that say their standards are not high enough it gives you a benchmark to guage your dog food against. If a food doesn’t at least meet AAFCO standards you may want to question its ‘ nutritional value.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) creates standards on which states base their feed rules and regulations. Dog Food Nutrient Profiles were last updated by the Canine Nutrition Expert Subcommittee in 1991. The updated profiles replaced the previous suggestions set by the National Research Council (NRC). The NRC printed new recommendations in 2006; AAFCO is currently in the act of updating the nutrient profiles.

Dog foods labeled as “complete and balanced” must meet standards established by the AAFCO either by meeting a nutrient profile or by passing a feeding trial. There are two separate nutrient profiles - one for puppies and nursing bitches called “growth and reproduction” and one for “adult maintenance”. The nutritive adequacy statement would include info on which life stage (s) the product is appropriate for. A product labeled as “for all life stages” must meet the more stringent nutrient profile for “growth and reproduction”. Products labeled as “intended for part time or supplemental feeding” don’t meet either profile.

Products that are substantiated to be “complete and balanced” by feeding trials bear the label statement”animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that (name of product) provides complete and balanced nutrition.” Feeding trials are conducted by actually feeding 8 dogs for 26 weeks to verify they show no clinical or pathological signs of nutritional deficiency or excess.

Products that are formulated with ingredients to meet the established nutrient profile would include the following statement. ” (Name of product) is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles.” Foods created to meet the specifications haven’t been evaluated by feeding trials so many consider this a lesser rating than foods that have established themselves by feeding trials.

Some manufacturers label their products with terms like premium, ultra premium, and holistic. These terms presently have no official definitions. The AAFCO is considering defining some of the terms. The terms “natural” and “organic” do have definitions; e.g, organic ingedients must meet the same USDA regulations as for organic human food.

You will have a ton of great moments with this loyal, brave, and understand that you have to properly train and socialize your pet in order to reach the best potential of the owner dog relationship.

Yorkies are extremely energetic as puppies and they are really an active breed. Training yorkie puppies includes giving them lots of opportunities to get that energy out. Take them on regular walks. Give your Yorkie pup the opportunity to play outside and run around. Having your puppy have toys help a lot, too. Giving commands to your Yorkie gives mental stimulation that also helps in the release of Yorkie puppy energy.

When you do start training your puppy, you have to start out with positive and negative commands. “Good girl” is an example of a positive command. “Down!” is a negative command. These commands the young puppy need to associate with the positive and the negative. Never ever beat up your Yorkie puppy when you give a negative command:use a loud tone to transmit your disapproval of bad behavior, though.

Another key component to training Yorkie puppies is to start when they are young. What is the ideal age you may ask? 8 weeks of age is best. Yorkies that get older and do not have this type of trainign as a pup will grow into the bad habit, and it will be that much harder to retrain the Yorkie. Your goal is to set the frame with them of you having control of the dynamics of your house.

The Yorkie has to understand that you are the leader, the alpha pact leader of the home. The bottom line is that if you don’t, all of this effort will be for nothing.

When your Yorkie is a little pup, it’s very important to introduce crate training.

Training Yorkie Puppies To Use Crates

All the times you are not at home to supervise your puppy should be the time the Yorkie is in the crate. Although temping to have that puppy in your bed, it’s actually bad for the Yorkie. The Yorkie puppy has to know that the crate is the safe haven with comfort and security. If the Yorkie is trained in the crate, you can see that separation anxiety, barking, being house broken, and so on will be greatly decreased.

Grooming Your Puppy in Four Easy Steps

Starting to groom your puppy in a situation in which he does not feel entirely comfortable is extremely difficult. Also do not expect your puppy to like being groomed from the very beginning. Be patient: It takes some time before he gets used to this unknown procedure.

Don’t get mad about him about his refusal. Just play with him for a short while and then start again with your grooming activities. Praise him and give him a treat as soon as he lets you continue with your work.

Puppy Bathing: Warm water at a temperature of between 15 and 40 degrees Celsius is ideal. Ensure that you use a mild puppy shampoo and avoid contact with the ears and eyes.

Puppy Brushing: Always use a soft brush for puppies, being careful not to apply too much pressure when brushing. Brush downwards from head to tail and from the neck, down the legs to paws. Be patient and reward well for obedience.

Clear your puppy’s ears with a moist tissue or cotton ball. Just wipe very gently around the inside of his ears and do not push.

Not many puppies like the ear clearing procedure. Nevertheless remain calm and patient. He will eventually get used to it. And remember: Reward and praise him.

Brushing your puppy’s teeth: Puppies lose their baby teeth when they are between 4 and 7 months old. It is a good idea to protect their adult teeth by regular brushing.

There are toothbrushes specifically made for dogs. The same is true for tooth pastes. Use a soft brush and before you apply the tooth paste let your puppy taste it. And again - as always - be very gentle and careful. It will take some time to get your pet used to it.

Brush gently to get your dog adjusted to the process even if you think the brushing might not even be effective. Don’t worry. Later on you can use a more vigorous brush and your dog will still enjoy it.

Do You Want to Raise a Happy and Well-Trained Puppy?

Training a puppy to become the loyal, trusted, and happy dog every dog owner would love to have is quite an accomplishment. And, amazingly, most dog lovers can achieve it, if only they follow a few basic dog training steps.

To start off with, it is important not to underestimate the power of treats. You should have some kind of treat with you at all times, when you are around your dog. That way, when he does well, you can reward him appropriately.

Treats do not have to necessarily be bought in the store. It can be a home-made dog biscuit or a piece of meat. Anything your dog loves eating, really. So once you are all set with your treats, you can start the training.

Step #1: Choose the command you want to teach wisely. Begin with a simple command, ideally with the sit command. This command is easy to teach, and you will be successful quite fast.

It will also be important as the foundation for other commands such as the stay command or the lie down command.

Step two: Simply hold a treat in your hand. Then let your dog smell it, but don’t actually allow him to eat it. Instead, move it slowly over his head. As his eyes will follow the treat, he will sit down eventually.

Once he has arrived in the sit position, it is time to let him have the treat and to praise him. Then repeat the exercise. Do so several times. But do not overdo it; try to keep the practice session short and sweet. It will be more enjoyable that way.

Step #3: Now you can introduce the verbal command “sit”. Simply repeat the exercise as in step two, but say sit, before you do so. Again, repeat the exercise.

Step #4: Once step three has been accomplished, do not use the treat to guide or dog anymore. Just use the verbal command. And, as always, praise your dog and give him a treat when he obeys you.

How to Teach Your Dog “Stay”

Teaching your dog the stay command is absolutely essential. The process of teaching him, however, may be somewhat difficult. But simply keep in mind that the command can be a life saver, and that once he understands and obeys it, it will have been worth its while.

In my opinion, the easiest way to teach your dog this command is from the sitting position. Have him sit and look at you. Then say the command: “Stay”. Look at him as you do so.

To make it even easier for your dog to understand the command, also signal with your hand that you want him to stay. Simply extend your arm and turn your hand so that your palm faces your dog. Say “stay,” show him the hand signal, and then remove yourself from your dog.

Especially in the beginning you need to make sure not to move too far. If you do, your dog will want to follow you. If he fails to obey the command and gets up, be firm with him, say “no”, and say “stay” again.

In contrast, if he does get it right, be excited. Make sure to give him a great treat or play with him for a little bit. He will learn the command faster, if he gets rewarded ever time he does it right.

The training will take time as you have to do this exercise over and over and over again. Every time you do so, you can increase the distance you are moving away a little bit.

You can change the places when you teach him this command, and you must check how well he is getting it by saying the command and trying to leave the room.

Granted, at first all this can be quite a challenge. But as time goes by he will come to understand what you want him to do.

Having a dog that will obey the stay command is a great pleasure. It will make both your life and his life much easier, especially in situation where you need to trust him to behave himself.

Choosing The Healthiest Nutrition For Your Pet: Guide To Dry Dog Food And Dog Food Supplies

Reading the nutritional adequacy statement on the label of the product’s packaging is a quick and reliable way to make sure you’ll be providing the best nutritional diet for your pet. You can use this statement as a guide to dry dog food and dog food supplies because it is informative and accurate, and all pet foods have some variation of this statement. It is there to tell you what the nutritional value of the product is, as well as which life stage of dogs it is aimed at.

Before you select a brand or type, it’s important to consider your animal’s age. Dogs in different life stages have different nutritional needs in order to be healthy. You can read which age group a kind of food is intended for on the label of the bag or can.

There are foods that are specially formulated for dogs of certain body types and conditions. If your pet is overweight, you can find a diet that will help him or her with weight control. Inversely, underweight dogs should be fed a diet that will build up his or her weight. Owners of dogs that are at a healthy weight should focus on maintenance; also consider how much exercise the animal gets daily.

If you are aware of any problems in your dog’s health history, you may want to ask the advice of a veterinarian before deciding what to feed him or her. Cancer and diabetes are serious medical conditions that can affect dogs just as they can humans. Other factors like any allergies your pet has or if he or she has trouble digesting certain food should also be taken into account.

In addition to making a healthy choice, an owner must also consider their dog’s personal preference. Dogs are individuals, just like people, and they will like what they like because of their own personal taste, not necessarily because of the nutritional value. It’s a good idea to try several different brands to find your dog’s preference. Since today’s selection is massive, it isn’t too hard to provide variety without sacrificing nutrition.

If you want to make sure that a new diet is agreeing with your pet and keeping him or her healthy, you can check on your pet after a month of being on the new food. Things to look for are healthy energy levels and healthy-looking skin and fur. It’s also a good idea to check the dog’s droppings to see that they are consistent and free of blood and mucous.

You can find many foods of varying grade and price at your local grocery store. Although premium brands use higher quality ingredients than standard brands, they are still known to contain the same chemicals and artificial flavors. Meal preparations with the most all-natural ingredients and the healthiest balance can usually be bought at veterinarian clinics, or can be found online and purchased directly from the manufacturer.

If you are trying to decide between moist or dry foods, know that both have their own appealing qualities. Canned is supposed to be more palatable, but most dogs aren’t too picky. If you have a pampered pup, moist might be the right choice. A lot of owners like dry food because of how easy it is to store and serve; it is also quite nutritious.

Canine owners, you will find details about the factors to consider when buying dry dog food for your pet and a brief summary of the reasons why you should purchase dog food supplies online, today.
